Our speakers for May will be longtime Arroyo Grande residents Carlen and Jim Eckford who run the Rancho Burro Donkey sanctuary. They started with 2 rescue donkeys in the early 2000s and now have 14 donkeys to care for. In 2017, they registered as a nonprofit organization. They plan to move to a new 46-acre property in San Luis Obispo. This will provide much more room for the donkeys to roam, and will provide space for more rescues as they arrive.

Judy Neuhauser is the President of Morro Coast Audubon Society. She was a field botanist for years, then transferred to a career as an educator, first for outdoor environmental education, then developing watershed education for the 4-H program, and ending her paid career as an elementary school classroom teacher. She will be introducing you to some of the various projects in which the Morro Coast Audubon is involved, including the Sweet Springs Nature Preserve, the Hi Mountain Condor Lookout, the Christmas Bird Count, Winter Bird Festival, numerous field trips, Bird Finding Guides, elementary classroom presentations, and advocacy for birds.

Alexandra Morris, a Gerontologist with 30 years of experience working with people living with dementia and their families. She was the ED in an Assisted Living, Site Director of an Adult Day Program, Director of a camp for brain injured adults and a State Certified Ombudsman. She provided care consulting and community and professional education for the Alzheimer's Association for 21 years. Currently she is a Geriatric Care Manager serving San Luis Obispo County families regarding the challenges that come with aging family members.

Judy Neuhauser is the President of Morro Coast Audubon Society. She was a field botanist for years, then transferred to a career as an educator, first for outdoor environmental

education, then developing watershed education for the 4-H program, and ending her paid career as an elementary school classroom teacher. She will be introducing you to some of the various projects in which the Morro Coast Audubon is involved, including the Sweet Springs Nature Preserve, the Hi Mountain Condor Lookout, the Christmas Bird Count, Winter Bird Festival, numerous field trips, Bird Finding Guides, elementary classroom presentations, and advocacy for birds.

Our November speaker will be Charlene Ables from the San Luis Obispo Chapter of the Assistance League.  The Assistance League is an all-volunteer-run organization that works to provide new school clothes, school supplies, and dental supplies to needy students in all ten school districts within San Luis Obispo County. Last year their volunteers touched the lives of 1,623 K-12 students through the League's Operation School Bell program.  In support of their programs, Assistance League volunteers run a beautiful, carefully curated thrift store in

downtown SLO on Marsh St. Last year, Assistance League volunteers donated nearly 21,000 hours to running the thrift store and raised $185,000 to help SLO County schoolchildren in need.

Our September speaker will be Bobby de Lancelotti from the Estero Bay Kindness Coalition.  Bobby will be speaking about the Coalition's children's backpack nutrition program, "Got Your Back."  "Got Your Back" serves students in 6 elementary and 2 middle schools in our area who normally receive free and reduced price meals at school during the week.  Due to reduced family circumstances, such students often go hungry over the weekend.  Hungry students struggle to do well in school.  "Got Your Back" was started to provide students with a backpack filled with breakfast, lunch, and dinner items to take them through the weekend.  Volunteers are careful to provide the backpacks anonymously so students don't feel embarassed about their situation.

In 2013, Walter Heath co-founded Morro Bay in Bloom as a public benefit organization to rehabilitate Morro Bay's parks, plazas, and other prized spaces.  Morro Bay in Bloom's "come when you can" model of friendly volunteer engagement in bite-size, two-hour sessions has caught on with people who are experienced gardeners as well as those having little to no gardening and landscaping skills.  The friendly, social nature of Morro Bay in Bloom's gardening sessions has built a community of people currently giving a whopping 5,000 hours per year to the City of Morro Bay. Walter will be talking about current and future Morro Bay in Bloom projects, and how Newcomers' members might choose to become involved in this deeply satisfying community benefit organization.

Our speaker in May will be San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson. Sheriff Parkinson has had a 35-year distinguished career in law enforcement, beginning in 1984 when he joined the Morro Bay Police Department. During his career in law enforcement, Sheriff Parkinson was assigned virtually every position available to a police officer, including major crime investigator, training officer, traffic officer, and narcotics investigator. In 2015 Sheriff Parkinson was sworn in for a second four-year term, having run unopposed in the previous election. He will be speaking to our group about human trafficking.
